Read African Rights Books Online
April 24th, 2008Now you can read and download books from Justice Africa’s website! We have recently posted two fantastic books published by African Rights (Justice Africa’s predecessor) and edited by Alex de Waal.
‘Food and Power in Sudan’ published in 1997, is a powerful analysis and critique of the complex military, political and humanitarian structures and practices that have contributed to famine in Sudan. Looking at the UN and NGOs working under Operation Lifeline Sudan; documenting how politicians and generals have caused famines and manipulated relief programmes; and providing analysis on the deeper political and economic processes that create famine; this book is a fascinating read and an invaluable resource for anyone interested in food, power and Sudan in the 1990s.
‘Facing Genocide: The Nuba of Sudan’ (1995) is a detailed report of the Sudan Government’s campaign against the Nuba people of Sudan. With the Nuba mountains sealed off for over six years, the government pursued its campaign of attacking villages and killing and kidnapping civilians unabated. This publication exposes these actions for what they were: genocide. Based on more than 130 first-hand testimonies of victims and witnesses of human rights abuse, 20 detailed reports by African Rights human rights’ monitors, and previously-secret military documents from the Sudanese army, ‘Facing Genocide’ covers a tragic and little-known period in Sudan’s recent history.
