Supporting Civil Society in Kordofan
Deep rooted conflicts with complex causes, similar to the pre-conflict situation in Darfur, exist in Kordofan and as such it is a ‘tinderbox’ for violence.
Justice Africa proposed to support and strengthen civil society in Kordofan in an effort to prevent a slide into civil war, through the following activities:
(a) Conduct a comprehensive mapping of Kordofan – its hotspots and conflict zones and compile the outcomes in papers for a civil conference in Kordofan (see b).
(b) Contact key players and stakeholders, such as tribal/community leaders, senior political leaders, and civil society activists in the region and from the capital to attend a strategic workshop to develop a collective and appropriate peacebuilding strategy for Kordofan. The workshop will take place in Khartoum.
(c) Organise a conference in Kordofan bringing together all civil society stakeholders, including tribal, community and religious leaders, youth and women, in which they prioritize the needs in Kordofan and identify their own support needs.
(d) Provide capacity building and promote local traditional methods of conflict prevention and conflict resolution which have been used to maintain stability in the region and which are in particular applicable to resolving issues between nomads and pastoralists
(e) Provide capacity building to these stakeholders to enable them to organize themselves and to assist them in obtaining funding from donors to carry out their activities.
